What’s the Best Light-Duty Truck for Towing 2016: Texas Truck Showdown

We put these five light-duty pickup trucks through a week’s worth of tow testing in and around Houston to see which came out on top. Our judges were: Mark Williams — PickupTrucks.com editorJoe Bruzek — Cars.com senior road test editorBruce Smith — automotive freelance journalist who specializes in trucks and 4x4sKent Sundling — editor and owner of MrTruck.com The Verdict: “Perhaps a Tundra equipped differently could have made a better tow rig,” Bruzek said, “but this Tundra with its off-road package was far outclassed for a comparison on maximum towing.” Quick start: The Tundra “launches with authority,” Smith said, and Williams agreed: “The engine and transmission is always ready to jump off the line.” Transmission: “It may be short a few gears compared with the others,” Bruzek said, “but the Tundra has very positive shifts from its six-speed package.” Handling: “Its light steering effort makes for quick lane changes, despite being the heaviest in this comparison,” Bruzek said, and Smith liked how the Tundra “handles the trailered load.” The 1794 trim level: Bruzek liked the &...

Creek Audio EVOLUTION 100A Integrated Amplifier Review | – StereoNET Australia & New Zealand

Britain’s Creek Audio has established a reputation for producing high-performance, value for money Hi-Fi components. We take a closer look at its state-of-the-art, modular design Evolution 100A integrated amplifier. I listened to a Creek EVOLUTION 50A integrated amplifier a couple of years ago and enjoying it. For its reasonable cost, it’s excellent value, but importantly it sounded great. I remember thinking at the time that Creek has always made equipment that sounds better than many of the mass-produced Asian brands out there for similar money. I now have the pleasure of looking more closely at the 50A’s big brother, the EVOLUTION 100A integrated amplifier hailing from the family-run British business that boasts over 36 years of audio history. Integrated amplifiers seem to be one of the most popular segments in the market today and are now becoming preferred over separate components. They are a compact all-in-one package that offers less clutter and without the need for auxiliary cables. I say that because the 100A is available as a $2,965 RRP two-channel integrated amplifier that has a modular chassis and is upgradable with additional input modules. You onl...

MFM for Bunkering; EU MID and Singapore TR48: The Facts

A response to the article in Ship & Bunker of 6 September 2016, called “MFM Accuracy: Understanding Why Singapore’s TR 48 is Superior to EU MID” by Douglas Raitt of Lloyd’s Register – Asia. Emerson was heavily involved from the beginning (2008) with the introduction of MFM [1] in bunkering applications in Europe and later in Singapore and is therefore well positioned to give a comparison of MID certification in Europe and TR48 certification in Singapore. The MID certification process is a certification process driven by national legislation within EU for measuring equipment, when used in custody transfer. Each country within EU has implemented the Measuring Instruments Directive (MID), as issued by the European Commission, into national legislation to harmonize the requirements between EU countries so that trade barriers are avoided. The MID certification process recognizes two stages, type examination testing and initial verification of each MFM, both performed by an authorized and competent organization. The MID has adopted the technical requirements out of OIML [2] recommendations. OIML R117, “Dynamic measuring systems for liquids other...

Meet the Bella Hadid–Approved Brand Repurposing Dickies Shirts

Today’s top models are the most in the know about emerging fashion brands. After all, they’re surrounded by clothes 24/7 and have access to the industry’s top stylists. So it’s only natural they get to wear the coolest underground designers first. Case in point: Bella Hadid, who stepped out in London last night wearing a top that reinterprets the classic Dickies workwear shirt. The quilt-like top is by Axecents by Orah LeMaître, which specializes in applying patchwork onto more utilitarian pieces, such as Dickies shirts and Levi’s jeans. Its crafted, repurposed designs—no two pieces are alike—have already been spotted on stylish gents during Men’s Fashion Week but are bound to gain in popularity thanks to Hadid’s approval. The line was launched last year by Joshua Coverdale, a fine artist turned designer from Bristol, Pennsylvania. He says the line is inspired by skateboarding culture—he’s a skater himself—as well as by “the colorful Caribbean scenery I’ve been exposed to by my family from Trinidad,” he told Vogue. Coverdale’s foray into fashion felt like a natural progression from his art career. “I started off as a painter, creating abstract paintings and other visual art, but...

In a Nike factory in Argentina’s hinterland, the ghost of Macri’s fall

ELDORADO, Argentina (Reuters) – Rumors of layoffs started spreading among workers at a factory here in northeastern Argentina making Nike Inc (NKE.N) shoes the night before Cristian Fredy Aquino’s scheduled shift. When his key card for the turnstile failed, Aquino realized the rumors were true. The plant was cutting hundreds of workers as orders from the U.S. apparel giant stalled, amid a swirling economic crisis that has plunged the country into recession for most of the last year. The Nike factory in Misiones province, one of Argentina’s poorest, is proving to be the tip of the iceberg. Around Argentina, nearly 16,000 textile and shoe factory workers have lost their jobs in the last year, according to government data, including nearly a quarter of all shoe sector workers. And the outlook is darkening: the peso currency has tumbled, interest rates are above 60% and annual inflation nearly 54%. In this lush jungle town with dusty red-dirt roads, laid-off workers, union delegates and locals Reuters spoke with on a recent trip had one person to blame: President Mauricio Macri, who was defeated outright in a general election on Sunday. Macri, who came to power in late 2015 a...

What’s Inside a PCB Manufacturing Facility? A Tour of Royal Flex Circuits

Take a look inside a PCB manufacturing facility and gain some insights about how boards are professionally fabricated. Royal Flex Circuits is a PCB manufacturing facility in Santa Fe Springs, California. The company is part of the Royal Circuits Group owned by Royal Circuit Solutions and focuses on flex and rigid-flex circuit boards, particularly quick-turn PCB manufacturing for both enterprise-level and single board fabrication. AAC’s Technical Editor, Mark Hughes, was invited to tour a new facility in progress. Royal Flex Circuits had outgrown its previous space and, at the time of the tour, was in the process of moving into a new one. So what equipment is in a PCB manufacturing facility? Here’s a look at parts of the process of PCB fabrication. The LENZ single speed DLG performs micro drilling and routing of PCBs. To maintain accuracy over wide temperatures and humidity conditions, the machine is built atop blocks of precision-ground granite. An automatic spindle drills holes and sensors can detect broken drills. Microvias are drilled with lasers to reach precise depths. Shown below is the ESI UV laser microvia drill. Since the power output of lasers decreases over tim...

When you think of boat shoes, one of the first images that comes to mind is probably a pair of iconic Sperry’s. It’s only right since they were the original American brand of boat shoe designed in 1935. The company was created when founder Paul Sperry struggled to get his footing on the deck of a slipper boat. After toying with a few ideas, he created an innovative shoe that had grooves carved into the rubber soles — providing traction against the surface of the deck. Now, you don’t have to be a seaman to own a pair of Sperry Topsiders. They work perfectly as a day to day shoe and come in handy when the weather takes a turn for the worse. If you’re wanting a pair of your own, you’re in luck. Right now, the comapny is having a huge sale on bo...

There’s a small, reasonably discrete patch of empty space towards the front of the Aston Martin

There’s a small, reasonably discrete patch of empty space towards the front of the Aston Martin Vantage’s transmission tunnel that – back at its official UK media reveal in late 2017 – prompted a somewhat inevitable line of questioning from attending members of the press. “Is that where the manual gear shifter is going to go, then?” was the general gist of these inquiries, all of which were levelled at boss man Andy Palmer. And as is so often the way with these things, his answer was far more nuanced than a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Reading between the lines, said reply was certainly explicit enough to indicate that Gaydon very much planned on rigging the Vantage up with a manual gearbox at some point. Aston’s PR team was understandably less than thrilled with Palmer’s revelation. Nevertheless, roughly two years later that car has finally arrived. Well, it sort of has, but we’ll get to that later on. For now, let’s look at how the nuts and bolts of this new Vantage differ from the regular model. First up, the standard car’s eight-speed ZF automatic transmission has obviously been swapped out. Replacing it is the same seven-speed Graziano manual ‘box that appeared in the ...

Friends, parents champion LGBTQ inclusion through elementary book donations

Much like the characters in the LGBTQ children’s books they champion, friends Keiko Feldman and Morgan Walsh realized the status quo was not good enough. For more than a year, the duo, both mothers of three, have transformed a one-time Facebook page linking like-minded parents into a 501 C-3 nonprofit dedicated to inclusion called Gender Nation. The pair spend much of their free time, and in many cases money, purchasing and donating LGBTQ-friendly children’s books for elementary school libraries throughout Southern California. Walsh and Feldman have donated literature to 67 schools and eight districts that reach about 40,000 students. They’ve also set equally daunting goals of expanding into Los Angeles Unified and the Central Valley within the next year. Some book recipients include the Burbank, Culver City, Glendale, La Cañada and Manhattan Beach unified school districts. “It was born out of an organic need,” said Walsh, a writer, actor and Toluca Lake resident. “Schools need these books and in the last 10 years a ton of these books have been written.” While Gender Nation was kick-started by an anonymous angel donor and is supported by a board of trustees that includes Walsh’s...
