SRAM launches electronic wireless Eagle AXS groupset and Reverb dropper

Set against the dramatic desert landscape of Tucson in Arizona with all its cactus (honestly, it’s like something out of a film or cartoon), SRAM unveiled its brand new and eagerly anticipated electronic wireless Eagle AXS groupset and Reverb dropper post, which brings eTap style wireless shifting to the off-road world. That a wireless mountain bike groupset was on the cards was no surprise, the rumour mill had been given a good shove along by sightings of an undisclosed groupset at some World Cup races last season. In fact, since SRAM debuted its first Red eTap wireless groupset on the road side back in 2015 has the question has been when, not if, SRAM would port the tech over to the mountain bike side.  The company admitted at the launch it would have happened sooner had it not been for the decision to focus its resources on developing Eagle, which with hindsight was a good move as there are a huge number of mountain bikes specced with its various levels of 1x technology. The new Eagle AXS groupset, offered in XX1 and X01 flavours, is built around the familiar and proven technology eTap technology that has been extensively tested and raced at the highest level in the road bike...

Ford’s aluminum-bodied F-150 is cheaper to repair than steel, report says

The Blue Oval’s big aluminum gamble paid off in the form of cheaper repairs and no insurance cost increases for owners. Ford’s F-150 went through some big weight loss changes in 2014, but it came out the other side being cheaper and faster to fix. When Ford announced that it would be making the body of its F-150 pickups out of aluminum, it got people all in a tizzy. See, historically, aluminum bodies were the province of exotic and sports cars. They were lightweight, yes, but fragile. Not something you’d want in a truck. Chevrolet took that idea and ran with it in a number of its ad campaigns, belittling Ford for using a fragile and expensive-to-fix material on a truck that’s meant to see real worksites and abuse. Well, according to a report published Monday by Automotive News, the aluminum F-150 isn’t that expensive to repair at all. Or, rather, it’s not that expensive anymore. Back in 2014, Ford’s grand experiment forced dealers to decide if they would invest in the training and equipment to repair the bodies of the new alu-bodied F-150. It was an expensive proposition at the time — with equipment costing dealers between $30,000 ...

Jet Dry Cleaning co-owners Adrian and Patricia Sandoval prepare a shirt for a customer.  The two

Jet Dry Cleaning co-owners Adrian and Patricia Sandoval prepare a shirt for a customer.  The two partnered with Dusty Shipp to open a second dry cleaning business in town.  The business opened in early autumn in the East End Mall shopping center. ELKO – Jet Dry Cleaning opened its doors July 1 at the East End Mall. Since then, the pace has been fast. “It’s kind of a speedy thing,” said co-owner Adrian Sandoval said. “That’s what we’re shooting for. Just, with our own experience bringing stuff in to other dry cleaners, it would take a week. People don’t want that. We want to create something that everybody wants and everybody needs.” The business offers two-day service for most items. Same-day turnaround is available for an extra fee. “I think it’s very important to provide that service,” Sandoval said. “Preferably [the item] needs to be in before noon.” Jet Dry Cleaning occupies a space formerly inhabited by Vic’s Dry Cleaning. Vic’s provided services for the community for about 20 years, according to Jet Dry Leaning co-owner Dusty Shipp. “We looked at it and basically decided it was a good deal, and that Elko needed two of them [cleaners] and decided to open it back up,” said ...

The Oklahoma City Fire Department will be hosting the “7th Annual Project Life Run” at Regatta Park along the Oklahoma River on Sept. 7. All proceeds from the event will go toward purchasing smoke alarms for Oklahoma City residents who need them. Organizers say the event will feature food, custom T-shirts, and custom finishers medals for everyone. The chinchilla breeding boom reaches Anchorage: A history

Part of a continuing weekly series on Anchorage history by local historian David Reamer. Have a question about Anchorage history or an idea for a future article? Go to the form at the bottom of this story. From the late 1940s through the mid-1950s, chinchilla breeding was a national investment fad, not unlike the more recent booms and busts associated with comic books, emu breeding and beanie babies. People invested in chinchillas in droves, not for the rodent’s dense, luxurious fur, but in the hope they could profit by selling the animals to others. In truth, chinchilla farming was a type of pyramid scheme. Americans across the country were hustled out of their savings. In this at least, Alaskans were no better than those Outside. Chinchillas are native to the higher elevations of the Andes Mountains in South America. The name derives from the Chincha, a pre-Columbian people in what is now Peru. The Chincha no longer exist; they were wiped out during the 16th century from the violence and disease brought by Spanish invaders. Due to demand for their fur and the loss of their natural habitat, wild chinchillas are themselves an endangered species. As noted by Edwin Bowen and Ross...

Its research, which surveyed more than 2,200 business owners and senior managers, also found that 81% of respondents see flexible working as a way of improving productivity, which is up from the 74% that said the same in 2013. The research also found that more than two-thirds (67%) of respondents also regard flexible working as a way of saving money, stating that it is lower cost than fixed-office working. A further 49% of respondents believe that offering flexible working gives organisations a recruitment advantage, with 68% citing that it is increasingly demanded by prospective employees. John Spencer, chief executive officer at Regus, said: “The recent regulatory changes give all staff the legal right to request flexible working, and the ...
