Bike riders love ‘new’ – new bikes, new kit and new products. But sometimes we find

Bike riders love ‘new’ – new bikes, new kit and new products. But sometimes we find a product that we like, that works for us, and we don’t really want to change things up, especially when it comes to personal aspects such as hydration.Asked to review another new hydration product not so long after I spent a month drinking a brand that I liked enough to take it to France on a recent trip for Bicycling Australia, I wondered…really? Can there be anything better than this? What could be different about PREPD? Then I spent some time chatting with Nathan Hocking and his team and learnt a thing or two about this new product. Namely, it isn’t a hydration drink, but actually a hydration enhancer. So that idea is very new. It meant I didn’t have to quit drinking the product I had decided was ‘my’ hydration drink. I could still have it, but add PREPD to my before and after exercise regime. The theory was that PREPD, which tastes like a very nice fruit smoothie (the mango and passionfruit Prime is taken six to 12 hours before training or racing while the equally as flavoursome strawberry and kiwi Recover is taken straight afterwards) works with other forms of hydration in my body (including...

Alexa’s Cyber Monday deals featured Amazon’s own brands ahead of others

Cyber Monday was the biggest shopping day in Amazon’s history. Turns out it was also a day for Amazon to promote its own brands over all others. On Monday, asking an Amazon Echo for the “best Cyber Monday deals” returned five straight responses from smart assistant Alexa that promoted products owned by Amazon: Amazon acquired Blink, a maker of security cameras, in 2017; it purchased Ring, the maker of video doorbells, in 2018. An Amazon spokesperson told Recode that after those first five deals, Amazon did promote items made by other companies, and that Alexa-enabled non-Echo devices returned deals in their first five responses that included non-Amazon-owned items. But the initial Alexa responses are just another sign of Amazon’s aggressiveness in promoting its own brands, whether they are gadgets like the Echo family of smart speaker products and Ring doorbells or apparel lines like Goodthreads. Amazon’s Black Friday deals also predominately featured Amazon’s own brands ahead of others, according to an analysis by Quartz. The holiday promotions come at a time when politicians, regulators, and even Amazon’s own sellers are increasingly scrutinizing whether the e-commerce giant f...

Graduating Secured Credit Cards to Full Featured Products

In Mercator Advisory Group’s research on secured cards, we noted how the market changed since the Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009 (CARD Act) eliminated a series of unfair practices. Before the regulation, the market was filled with hard money lenders who took advantage of borrowers with sky-high interest rates and even worse junk fees. Things like application fees, activation fees, and risk fees tainted the product. The CARD Act cleaned up the business, and now top lenders, from Bank of America, Chase, Discover, and US Bank, offer worthwhile cards, with interest rates ranging from 11.65% to 24.99%, and reasonable, in-range fees.  Mastercard and Visa also came out with more rigorous standards for their franchisees. We peg the U.S. market at almost 5 million cards today, with the potential to embrace 500 percent more, given the number of low-banked, underbanked, and unbanked in the market. Working in credit for decades often brings friends and acquaintances with questions about “what is the best card for me to get?” Many times my answer is something along the lines of a Chase Freedom card, which I like because it carries an excellent reward st...

Do you frequently field complaints that the wireless network is spotty at the far ends of your house?  If so, then you need a mesh network. It takes your wireless signal and, through dedicated hardware, broadcasts it via discrete networks to mesh points that you place throughout your house. It’s a great way to make sure everyone has a great network connection, no matter where they are.  The Netgear Orbi Voice is unique in this list because it does more than just bathe your home in whole-house Wi-Fi. In my testing, I found the base unit, with its six antennas hidden inside, to be almost powerful enough to cover my home on its own. But plug in the mesh unit and suddenly you also have a full-fledged smart speaker with Amazon Alexa built in. Beyond just extending your network, Netgear’s Orbi Voice w...
